When an adventurous American family decided to relocate to Berlin, they weren’t just looking for a change of scenery—they were ready to embrace a whole new way of living. Situated in the central Berlin neighborhood of Charlottenburg, they found a classic Altbau apartment full of potential, complete with soaring 3.5-meter ceilings, original pre war details, and of course, a few challenges.
What began as a modest plan to add a shower to the guest bathroom quickly evolved into an expanded renovation of the apartment’s entrance, kitchen, guest bath, and guest room. Working together, the flow and functionality of the space was reimagined to suit modern family life, all while honoring the building’s pre-war charm.
Renovating abroad became more than a design project—it was a lesson in navigating language, culture, and craftsmanship through collaboration and shared understanding.
The two, large principal rooms facing the street were opened up to create a bright and welcoming kitchen and dining area. With ceiling-high cabinetry and ample natural light, this new central space became the heart of the home—ideal for both everyday living and entertaining.
Storage, always at a premium in older apartments, became a key theme.
Custom cabinetry, designed by Christine White and crafted by the cabinet makers at Raumprojekt in Hoppegarten, was used throughout to seamlessly integrate practical solutions into the aesthetic of the space.
The former kitchen, tucked away at the back of the apartment, was transformed into a stylish guest bedroom. Awkward wall angles were cleverly concealed with built-in cabinetry, turning what had been a cramped and dated room into a serene retreat.
Watery green subway tiles add a pop of colour and brightness to the newly updated and expanded guest bathroom, complementing the light, understated palette used throughout the home.
Remodeling in a foreign country and language is never easy—but this family met the challenge head-on with optimism, curiosity, and a strong collaborative spirit.
Working together with a local designer who also shared their North American background proved invaluable, helping them navigate not only the language but also cultural nuances and the renovation process itself. The result is a home that reflects their journey: thoughtful, warm, and full of life.
