Go outside your comfort zone – try something bold and different

September 5, 2019

I don’t know what it is about being in France but even the air and the light seem to be a bit different.  Somehow more stylish.  Is that even possible?

Having been on the road from my base in Berlin to Toronto, New York and France this year, I take the opportunity to incorporate what I see into my work and daily life.

Traveling is always about stepping out of your comfort zone – you temporarily leave behind what is familiar and venture out into parts unknown and in return, sometimes you get what you didn’t know you wanted.  And other times what you didn’t want, but that’s another story.

Maybe it’s because we’re more relaxed but when we travel,  we see everything in a different light.  So why not capture some of that to create a fresh dynamic in your interiors?  As the days grow shorter and the season starts to shift, our focus once again turns indoors and it’s a great time to make changes.

use the space above – have fun with oversized lighting

Trying something new or unsusual  but that you are unsure about is a great way to bring new energy into your interiors.   Have you ever noticed something in a café, shop, nightclub or hotel that you thought looked amazing but never thought it could work in your home or office?  It’s not a matter of straight imitation but being inspired and capturing the feel in your space.

Here are some ways to bring an unexpected and original feel to your home.

Mirror mounted lights essentially double the light and create visual interest – here it’s used to whimsical effect in the entrance of a New York speakeasy.

go overboard with repeated elements

And here, in a residential bathroom.

The lounge of the boutique hotel Villa Florangerie in Strasbourg welcomes its guests with this dynamic and colourful seating area.  I admit to loving neutral and ocean colour schemes  but this really spoke to me.

Mixing it up a bit is the theme here.  Minimalist pieces with warm metals like brass, gold or copper.  Throw a floral fabric into your mid century modern space. Luxury with minimalism, natural with fake or even tacky, neutral with bold.  Contrasting elements are an amazing way to add original inspiration to your space.

Step outside your comfort zone and you’ll be amazed at what happens.
